No matter what type of thermal fluid you’re using, there will come a time when it needs to be replaced. When that happens, you have several options for disposal—or even better, recycling.
Petroleum-Based Fluids
Petroleum-based thermal fluids can often be combined with other petroleum waste oils like hydraulic fluids or lubricants. From there, many recycling or repurposing programs are available.
In addition to local services, national providers such as Safety-Kleen and Waste Management offer programs that collect fluids on-site and transport them to facilities. There, the fluids are either blended with other waste oils for use as fuel or re-refined back into base oil for reuse in industrial and consumer products. In some cases, these companies may even purchase the waste oil.
Synthetic or Chemical Aromatic Fluids
Fluids classified as synthetic or chemical aromatics generally require more care. They are often treated as hazardous waste and must be handled in accordance with local regulations. While some can still be reclaimed, they need to be segregated for proper disposal.
Miscellaneous Chemistries
Other fluid types, such as silicones and glycols, are not typically considered hazardous but should still be segregated. The best approach is to consult the manufacturer or a qualified disposal company for guidance on proper recycling or disposal options.
Drum and Tote Disposal
A common question we receive after delivering replacement fluid is: “What should I do with the empty drums or totes?”
Used drums can usually be collected by local drum re-conditioners or recyclers, cleaned, and put back into service. Here are a few resources for drum reconditioners in specific provinces:
